Golden Plover (Pluvialis apricaria) by George White of Salisbury. A mature bird in winter plumage. A five-sided glass, wall hanging case, with original hanging ring. There is a small makers stamp to the left of the backboard. A metal die has been used to stamp this impression in the backboard. White often used this technique for marking his cases. Unfortunately it impossible to photograph the mark. Ex Andy Henry collection.

The front glass is cracked (see detail), the backboard is split and the bird's left foot is lifting. Nonethless a very pretty case and very typical of White's work (excellent taxidermy, characteristic groundwork, faux clouds on a graduated backboard) and a lovely piece of historical taxidermy (c1880). Size 13" x 10" x 4". <click image to enlarge>
